Adam waited excitedly outside of the entrance to the Lincoln Park Zoo for Isa to arrive. It had been a week since they've hung out due to their busy school schedules and Adam felt like he was literally dying without her around to brighten up his day. They had only been best friends for a short awhile, but he felt that she was slowly becoming one of the most important people in his lives next to his mother and sister.
It was kind of ironic that his best friend was a girl, considering that he was so nervous around them, but Isa really didn't feel like a girl to him, she was just one of the guys and he was more comfortable around her than around the friends he'd had for several years now. She was funny, accepted his nerdy behavior, calmed him down whenever his anxiety was taking over, and she reminded him to take a break and have fun every now and then. If it wasn't for her, he'd be in his dorm room studying or playing videogames, not seeing actual light for days at a time.
It was a nice winter day out - no snow, no wind, just a brightly shining sun. It was kind of odd to go to the zoo in the middle of winter, but Lincoln Park was still open and at night they had an amazing light display. Most of the animals would be inside anyway, so it wasn't like the two of them would be freezing their butts off. Adam bounced around in his battered converse sneakers, trying to stay warm. He was a scrawny kid, and though it wasn't below freezing, he was still shivering in his Columbia jacket. Besides, his shivering was his fault. He always arrived to places early, too early, and was always stuck waiting around for the person he was meeting. Luckily this person was Isa, and she knew him well, so although they decided to meet here at 2, she'd be here at 1:30, which was any moment now. Adam smiled at the thought of her arrival...he couldn't wait to hug the hell out of her!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - Isabella had been consumed by her schoolwork over the last week. She always devoted all of her time to her academics. However, this semester seemed to be worse than the rest of them. It appeared that all of her exams and papers that were due piled up in the same week. It was bad enough that she spent most of her time studying and doing schoolwork anyways. When a week had more than two exams, she was particularly frazzled. Due to the end of such a stressful and long week, Isabella was treating herself. Not only was she going to the zoo – cute baby animals! – but she was finally going to be able to see Adam, a privilege she hadn’t been able to indulge in over the last week.
Isa was very selective about her friends. Growing up, Isabella had been her mother’s golden child. Her grades were flawless, she never got into trouble, and she had a spotless reputation all around. She turned her nose up at people that spent their nights partying into the early morning hours. When people didn’t take their education seriously, Isabella didn’t take them seriously. Therefore, she always had trouble making true and honest friends that she felt were worth her time. She willingly called herself a snob. She had a very exclusive friend group, and thankfully, Adam was part of that group.
They hadn’t known each other a very long time. It had been about a year. Isa felt that they had never missed a beat though. They’d easily got along from the start. There was no denying that they were the perfect match. He had only good qualities in her eyes. It didn’t bother her in the least that he wasn’t a female. Who said anything about her best friend needing to be female? Isabella typically strayed away from the male gender. It wasn’t that she was shy or nervous around them. Hell, she knew she could handle any man. Isabella grew up the daughter of a single mother. Her father had run off and abandoned her mother when she’d told him she was pregnant. Because of that, Isa felt weary of all guys. She didn’t trust nearly any of them. She never dated anyone seriously because of the way she felt. Adam was entirely different and she knew that from the moment the two of them had met. He wasn’t the typical douchebag guy. He was normal, and a lot like her.
Bundling herself up for the weather, Isabella glanced at the clock. She was always on time and Adam knew that. In fact, he was probably already there. If anyone could beat her somewhere, it was Adam. Snuggling herself into her winter jacket, she made her way out the door, walking briskly down the steps of her apartment near the university and out into the cold winter air. It was a beautiful winter day. It wasn’t snowing and it wasn’t too windy. Isabella was thankful for that. She usually became quite flustered when the wind whipped her hair around. She usually ended up throwing it into some kind of ponytail. For the occasion though she’d kept her long hair down and naturally wavy.
Turning towards the zoo, her face broke into a graceful smile when she caught sight of her best friend ahead of her. She couldn’t help herself – she broke out into a slight jog towards him. Not bothering to check and make sure it was okay, she flung her arms around his neck and squeezed. They didn’t normally go this long without seeing one another. Pulling back, she didn’t release her grip on him, keeping her arms around his neck affectionately. “I’ve missed you.” Grinning from ear to ear, she tilted her head as she looked up at him.
